Robert L. Platukis, known as Bob, passed away on March 14, 2025, in Worcester, Massachusetts, at the age of 79. Born on February 14, 1946, in Worcester, he dedicated his life to education, martial arts, and community service, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by many.
Bob devoted his entire teaching career to shaping the minds of young learners, specifically teaching 5th grade in various Worcester Public Schools. With a Master's degree in Education from Worcester State College, he was not only an educator but also a mentor who impacted countless students over the years. His passion for teaching was rivaled only by his dedication to his community, where he served actively in Auburn town government. Notably, he held the position of chairman of the Auburn Veteran’s Memorial Corridor advisory committee, playing a crucial role in the creation of several Veteran's Memorials in town. His advocacy extended to promoting essential life skills, such as swimming, by pushing for a local swimming location for children.
In addition to his educational and civic contributions, Bob was an accomplished martial artist. He studied the Burmese martial art of bando at Clark University, earning his black belt in 1974. He took over his instructor's school in 1975 and continued to teach Bando of New England for 40 years, sharing his knowledge and love for martial arts with a new generation of students.
Outside of his professional life, Bob's love for animals shone through as he spent many years as a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog breeder, nurturing this noble breed with care and dedication. His hobbies also included an exceptional talent for golf, evidenced by his status as the number one player on his high school team and his continued performance at Worcester State College.
Children in the family remember his "nuggies" and his tradition of bringing an abundance of desserts to family gatherings.
Bob is survived by his brother Peter G. Platukis and sister-in-law Carole Platukis, along with his niece Kristine and nephew Peter. His profound impact as a teacher, community member, and family figure will be cherished and remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
