Marjorie Lorraine Power, affectionately known as "Margie" and “Margarita,” was a beautiful soul who graced the world with her presence from October 22, 1954, until her passing on October 14, 2024. Born and raised in Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood, Margie's life was a tapestry woven with strength, laughter, love, and compassion.
Margie graduated from Mission High School in Roxbury in 1972 and later pursued a career in the medical field, graduating from Bryman College as a medical assistant. Margie's career as a phlebotomist at Brigham and Women's Hospital showcased her compassion for others. Her gift for making patients feel at ease transformed what could have been a stressful experience into something manageable and calming. Co-workers and patients alike were drawn to her kindness, big personality, and genuine warmth. She had an extraordinary ability to connect with people, making countless friends throughout her life.
Margie always loved to have fun and lived life to the fullest (much to the chagrin of her doctors!). In her younger days, “Margarita” could often be found dancing the night away with friends to Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor or singing “New York, New York” (very loudly) into a hairbrush alongside her sisters (and brothers!).
But her greatest joy was being a mother and “gamma.” She loved making memories with her family, vacationing in Maine, and going on day trips to Newport, Plymouth, and Boston. Still, her most precious moments were the simple ones: getting her grandson off the school bus, helping her daughter fold clothes, watching their favorite TV shows together, and just being a part of their everyday lives.
Her love for the Boston Red Sox, sunflowers, sunsets, butterscotch candy, Frank Sinatra, and the holidays' magic reflected her joy in the simple things. Margie's excitement for the season's first snowfall underscored her childlike wonder, reminding us to find joy in the simple things life offers.
Margie is survived by her beloved daughter, Angela (Giosi) Burke; her cherished grandson, John “JD” Burke; her siblings, Christine Stuart, John McCann, Joseph McCann, Mary Roy, Barbie Fike, and Terry McCann; and her beloved brothers-in-law, Larry Roy and Stephen Fike. She leaves behind close friends who became family, including John Alvino, Maryellen Giosi, and Carol and Joe Gillis, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren, and extended family members.
Margie is now reunited with her husband, John F. Power; her mother, Margaret McCann; her father, John McCann; and her brother, Michael McCann.
Margie's legacy will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her loving spirit, unwavering strength, and compassion will remain an inspiration to those she touched, reminding all of us to embrace life with open arms and an open heart. Though she has left this physical world, her laughter, love, and compassion will continue to resonate within us, guiding us toward the light she beautifully embodied.
