Berthena “Cat” (Barden) Gamble, 90 formerly of 147 Marion Street, Springfield, Massachusetts, departed this life on Thursday, May 1, 2023, at Baystate Medical Center.
Born in Pamplico, South Carolina, on December 27, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Corrine and Clyde Barden of Pamplico, South Carolina. Mrs. Gamble moved to Springfield over 40 years ago and retired from The Holiday Inn/Ramada Hotel Suites. She enjoyed cooking, especially making homemade pies and cakes, and was famous for her fruit cakes as well as her chocolate cake. Berthena also enjoyed watching her soap operas, relaxing in her easy chair, doing her word search puzzles, crocheting her aftgans, and arts and crafts with her grandchildren.
She joins in life her beloved husband of 56 years Robert Gamble (predeceased), her sons Robert Gamble Jr, Christopher Gamble, Randolph Barden, and Anthony Gamble, all of whom are predeceased before her. She is survived by her son Samuel Gamble (wife, Yvette) of Florence, South Carolina, four daughters, , Clyda Sue Stucky of Florence, South Carolina, Sharon Gamble King of Dallas, Texas, Cheryl Gamble, and Hope Gamble of Springfield, Massachusetts. Berthena is also survived by her sister Vernalee Pendergrass of Detroit, Michigan and her predeceased sister Berniece Boatwright of Plainfield, New Jersey; seventeen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and five great- great grandchildren (known at this time), and a host of other family and friends.
Memorial/Celebration of Life will be held: Friday, May 26, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at J.C. Williams Community Center, 116 Florence street, Springfield, MA 01105
